The position of Transportation Security Officer (TSO) (those people responsible for inspecting passengers, baggage and cargo before boarding or going on to aircraft) pays $14.15 per hour for part-time, including Federal Benefits. Two weeks paid training is provided. The application process for TSO positions is involved, comprising a background investigation, credit check, medical evaluation, drug screening, and in-person interview at the airport. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens or U.S. Nationals (born in American Samoa or the Northern Mariana Islands), and have a GED OR high school diploma OR 1 year of previous security or aviation screening experience. Not all applicants will pass the various stages of this process, which is preceded by English Proficiency and Object Identification tests at a local computer store or similar facility. Criminal background (depending on the situation), an inability to pass the credit check (situations which will disqualify candidates are: 1) owing $5,000 or more and not making any payments for 6 months or more; 2) not having paid State or Federal income taxes; 3) not making child support payments; and, 4) being in default on a Federal loan), or an inability to pass the pre-employment tests result in significant numbers of applicants being disqualified for the positions.
